Natural Holistic Remedies When Traveling  

What to include in your vacation medicine kit.

Tea Tree Oil

This quiet little oil packs a powerful punch in so many ways. I read it is called the down under thunder! It is very versatile.  Mosquitoes and bug bites are a thing of the past because tea tree oil keeps them away from my body.  Just a few drops on all my pulse points and I am ready for a hike or a day of sight-seeing.

It is anti-microbial and an antiseptic. I wipe down the armrest and food tray on the plane, sanitize my hands with it, wipe off the TV remote in the hotel and carry it with my everywhere.

Tea tree oil is also anti-fungal, so when I visit a pool, hot tub, public shower, after a mani-pedi, I always rub a few drops of this elixir onto my fingers and toes. I want to prevent any nail fungus.

Lavender Essential Oil

Getting to your destination can be draining and I use lavender oil to keep me calm and relaxed. Several drops find their way to my pillow so I can rest assured a good night sleep will happen.

Are you prone to headaches? I am not, but when I am moving between time zones, headaches have been known to be a part of travel. Lavender oil placed on the back of my neck works wonders. It is soothing and has a calming effect.

You might be a sun worshiper, even touring all day can bring on a bit of sun sting. I mix a little lavender with aloe gel and the relief is immediate.

Use this natural holistic remedy to keep the colds away. Ginger can actually kill the rhinovirus that causes a cold. Again, a few drops in filtered water and I feel protected from the common cold

Peppermint Essential Oil

I have found travel to be hard work! The long lines at the airport, the delays, do I take a cab or Uber or Lyft from the airport. Is my room ready? Did I pack the right clothes. Walking five to ten miles a day… I need a rest.

Peppermint is the ‘pick-me-up’ that keeps me going. One drop of this minty fresh oil in the palm of my hands, warmed and inhaled, improves energy and mood.

At the beach, I carry a spritzer bottle of water and mixed with a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Has such a refreshing feeling and keeps cool.

Ward off a cold while traveling with peppermint oil. I like to mix it with tea tree oil and add to a sink full of hot water. You know the drill – towel over head, lean in and inhale the fragrances.

Ginger

Foodies need to pack ginger. I like to try different food when I travel and my stomach does not always appreciate my choices. Overeating can also be a travel pastime! Ginger calms the tummy and, I learned , it stimulates the production of bile, thus aiding digestion. Instead of dessert, I just don’t eat desserts, I mix two drops of ginger in a few ounces of filtered water and sit back and relax. 

I only purchase the highest quality essential oils. Please consider using unadulterated, products.  Ingesting oils is a personal decision. Seek advice from a trusted health care professional to learn what will be effective for you.

When flying, you need to pay attention to the TSA rules to keep your natural holistic remedies from being confiscated.

Here is the current Carry-On Rules for Liquids (Flying Within or Out of the United States)

Each passenger is allowed ONE quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-topped bag to hold liquids they want to carry on the plane with them. Each container within the bag must be 3.4 ounces/oz (100 milliliters/mL) or less.

There is no defined limit on the total ounces of the liquids in the bag, but you can only take what will fit reasonably within the bag itself. So, as long as the bag will zip properly and isn’t bursting at the seams, you should be fine.
